This Bay Area/Brooklyn synth-pop outfit has been slowly mastering a messy dance aesthetic over the course of three full-lengths, and Minus Tide offers truncated pop-informed tunes -- bargain basement hi-NRG anthems alternating with chemically enhanced Madchester-lite dancefloor shenanigans ("tastes like acid," "lifts me up, then pulls me under"). No bad trips, though: The rough synths on toughest track "Orchid Bloom" never quite overpower the angelic presence of vocalist Callan Clendenin. Indie's love affair with Reagan-era technology continues apace.
