Not unlike Haim, who also reside in L.A., Garrett Borns (aka BØRNS) weaves together a dizzying number of styles. The result is music that's deceptively simple and utterly alluring. In terms of vocals, his debut is awash in tropical falsettos and sunshine choruses reminiscent of vintage Beach Boys. Sometimes, all that wonderful singing is smeared across electro-R&B beats ("Holy Ghost," "Dug My Heart"); other times, it rests oh-so-delicately atop sturdy rock grooves ("Electric Love," "Fool"). Either way, Dopamine is the sonic equivalent of a leisurely swim in a palm tree-lined lagoon.
